Mastering the Armenian Alphabet and Basic Present Tense Verb Conjugation

Opening Context

Taking your first steps into Armenian can feel like stepping into a secret world, largely because of its unique and beautiful alphabet. While the 39 letters might look intimidating at first glance, the Armenian writing system is incredibly logical and phonetic—meaning words are pronounced exactly as they are spelled. Once you unlock the letters, you unlock the language.

Coupled with the alphabet, mastering the present tense is the most powerful tool for a beginner. It allows you to describe your daily routines, state facts, and express what you are doing right now. By combining a foundational understanding of the alphabet with basic verb conjugation, you will transition from simply looking at shapes to actually reading and speaking meaningful sentences.

Note: This lesson focuses on Eastern Armenian, which is the official standard used in the Republic of Armenia.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Recognize and pronounce a core subset of the Armenian alphabet.
  • Understand the phonetic nature of Armenian reading and writing.
  • Conjugate the essential auxiliary verb լինել (linel - to be) in the present tense.
  • Form present tense sentences using regular verbs ending in -ել (-el) and -ալ (-al).

Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites for this lesson. It is designed for absolute beginners.

Core Concepts

1. The Armenian Alphabet (Այբուբեն - Aybuben)

The Armenian alphabet was invented in 405 AD by Mesrop Mashtots. It consists of 39 letters. Unlike English, Armenian is highly phonetic. There are no silent letters, and each letter generally corresponds to a single sound.

To get you reading immediately, here is a foundational subset of vowels and consonants used frequently in basic verbs:

Core Vowels:

  • ա (a) — pronounced like the "a" in "father".
  • ե (ye / e) — pronounced "ye" at the beginning of a word, and "e" (like "bed") in the middle or end.
  • ի (i) — pronounced like the "ee" in "see".
  • ու (u) — pronounced like the "oo" in "boot".
  • օ (o) — pronounced like the "o" in "more".

Core Consonants:

  • մ (m) — like "m" in "mother".
  • ս (s) — like "s" in "sun".
  • գ (g) — like "g" in "go".
  • ր (r) — a lightly rolled or tapped "r".
  • լ (l) — like "l" in "light".

By combining these, you can already read simple words: մաս (mas - part), սար (sar - mountain), գիր (gir - letter/writing).

2. The Auxiliary Verb "To Be" (Լինել - Linel)

In Armenian, the present tense relies heavily on the auxiliary verb "to be." You must know these forms to conjugate any other verb.

Here is the present tense of լինել (linel):

  • ես եմ (yes em) — I am
  • դու ես (du es) — You are (singular/informal)
  • նա է (na e) — He/She/It is
  • մենք ենք (menq enq) — We are
  • դուք եք (duq eq) — You are (plural/formal)
  • նրանք են (nranq en) — They are

3. The Present Participle (-ում / -um)

Armenian verbs in their dictionary form (the infinitive) end in either -ել (-el) or -ալ (-al). Examples:

  • գրել (grel) — to write
  • կարդալ (kardal) — to read

To form the present tense, you first create the present participle. You do this by dropping the -ել (-el) or -ալ (-al) ending and adding -ում (-um).

  • գրել (grel) becomes գրում (grum)
  • կարդալ (kardal) becomes կարդում (kardum)

4. Forming the Present Tense

The present tense in Eastern Armenian translates to both the English simple present ("I write") and present continuous ("I am writing").

The formula is: Present Participle + Auxiliary Verb

Conjugating an -ել (-el) verb: գրել (grel - to write)

  • ես գրում եմ (yes grum em) — I write / I am writing
  • դու գրում ես (du grum es) — You write
  • նա գրում է (na grum e) — He/she writes
  • մենք գրում ենք (menq grum enq) — We write
  • դուք գրում եք (duq grum eq) — You write
  • նրանք գրում են (nranq grum en) — They write

Conjugating an -ալ (-al) verb: կարդալ (kardal - to read)

  • ես կարդում եմ (yes kardum em) — I read / I am reading
  • դու կարդում ես (du kardum es) — You read
  • նա կարդում է (na kardum e) — He/she reads
  • մենք կարդում ենք (menq kardum enq) — We read
  • դուք կարդում եք (duq kardum eq) — You read
  • նրանք կարդում են (nranq kardum en) — They read

Common Mistakes

1. Forgetting the auxiliary verb

  • Mistake: Ես գրում (Yes grum).
  • Why it happens: Learners translate "I write" directly, forgetting that Armenian requires the "am/is/are" helper verb for the present tense.
  • Correction: Ես գրում եմ (Yes grum em).
  • Tip: Always think of the Armenian present tense as "I am writing" rather than "I write."

2. Using the infinitive instead of the participle

  • Mistake: Ես գրել եմ (Yes grel em).
  • Why it happens: Learners combine the dictionary form of the verb directly with the auxiliary verb.
  • Correction: Ես գրում եմ (Yes grum em).
  • Tip: If you are talking about right now, you must hear the "um" sound. No "um", no present tense!

3. Confusing the pronunciation of ե (ye/e) and է (e)

  • Mistake: Pronouncing the auxiliary verb եմ (em) as "yem".
  • Why it happens: The letter ե is pronounced "ye" at the beginning of most words (like ես - yes). However, the auxiliary verbs (եմ, ես, ենք, եք, են) are exceptions and are pronounced with a short "e" sound, even though they start with ե.
  • Correction: Pronounce եմ (em) like the "em" in "emerald", not "yem".

Practice Prompts

  1. Write out the present tense conjugation for the verb խմել (khmel - to drink) for all six pronouns.
  2. Write out the present tense conjugation for the verb խաղալ (khaghal - to play) for all six pronouns.
  3. Try reading these words aloud using the core alphabet rules: մայր (mayr - mother), լույս (luys - light), սուրճ (surtch - coffee).
  4. Translate to Armenian: "We are reading" and "They are writing."

Examples

Here is how these verbs look in simple, everyday sentences. Notice that the verb usually goes at the end of the sentence.

  • Ես սուրճ եմ խմում: (Yes surtch em khmum.) — I am drinking coffee.
  • Դու գիրք ես կարդում: (Du girq es kardum.) — You are reading a book.
  • Նա նամակ է գրում: (Na namak e grum.) — He/she is writing a letter.
  • Մենք բակում ենք խաղում: (Menq bakum enq khaghum.) — We are playing in the yard.

Note: In natural speech, the auxiliary verb (եմ, ես, է...) often attaches to the object (like սուրճ եմ) rather than the verb, but the core conjugation remains exactly the same.

Key Takeaways

  • The Armenian alphabet is highly phonetic; once you learn the sounds, you can read almost anything.
  • The present tense requires two parts: the present participle ending in -ում (-um) and the auxiliary verb (եմ, ես, է, ենք, եք, են).
  • To make the participle, drop the -ել (-el) or -ալ (-al) from the dictionary form and add -ում (-um).
  • The Armenian present tense covers both "I do" and "I am doing."
